Parking Tickets

Posted by [info]qiushuwen in [info]vancouver on 2009.11.16 at 19:12
This morning on Virgin 95.3, Drew mentioned he'd gotten a parking ticket on his new car and briefly talked about an email he'd gotten from a VPD officer saying that parking tickets can be forgiven once a year (per driver's license or per vehicle registration, can't recall which).

Drew also talked about the process, but I can't remember! Did anyone catch it [the number]? Does anyone know?

I figure this must be filed for future use.

TIA

Printing

My printer is broken and I was wondering if there was anywhere I could go to get about 10 pages, printed off if I saved the file on usb. Would I be able to do this at the public library?

Thanks!

Thanks for your well wishes and prayers, all. Tonight I lifted the Glenlivet with my brother and sister while they were on the phone.

I was just outside on our new cafe's 'patio' and it's gorgeous out. Cool and sunny and the air is so crisp!

Did I mention that I turned in Angel One to my editor last week? That means that this week, I'm working on what was commonly called "one oh one oh one oh one oh one oh one" by my friends on TNG. It's also known as The One With The Bynars, and I recall thinking that it was pretty good. I loved working on it, but until I watch it later today, I don't remember exactly why.

Some people have asked me how I put these things together, but I never know exactly how the memories will shake loose for me while I'm watching it. There are some things I remember clearly, like Jonathan crashing into the turbolift doors on the bridge, and then there are others that I haven't thought about in years, that hit me like one of those snowballs Wesley Crusher threw out of the holodeck at Captain Picard - like the time Lawrence Tierney scared the shit out of me just outside stage 16 while we were filming The Big Goodbye. I plan to spend more time with my friends from the cast and crew while I work on Volume Two than I did with Volume One, mostly because it's a great excuse to get together with people I like, but also because I love the Roshomon-like experience of sharing our memories of the future. For example, when I was talking with Brent about The Big Goodbye, he remembered that Lawrence Tierney showed up for work his first day, and for some reason, rather than waiting for the guard on Melrose to open the gate, drove his car right through it. When Brent told me that, I remembered it like it had just happened, but it was something I hadn't thought about in ages. Incidentally, Brent told me that everyone was as scared of Lawrence Tierney as I was, which surprised me.

I'm excited to dig into the second half of the season, mostly because the Memories of the Futurecasts have been so much fun, and have been so well-received by so many people, that I feel inspired and energized. I'm not going to lie to you, Marge, some of the episodes in Volume One were a real slog and not much fun at all, and I think that unfortunately comes through in those chapters. Now that I know how much at least a few thousand people (and hopefully more) want to read Volume Two, I can't wait to see what I can come up with.

Okay, some business that needs attention before I get to work:

Have you caught a typo or formatting error in Memories of the Future, Volume One? If you have, would you please leave the page and paragraph number in a comment on this entry? I'm going to do an ePub version (Lulu now supports that, in addition to PDF) ... so I'd like to repair any mistakes before I do the conversion.

Would you be interested in a limited edition, signed and numbered hardback, similar to what I did with Happiest Days of Our Lives? I ask because it's going to cost me a not-insignificant amount of money to make them, and I kind of need to know that it's even something people are interested in. It would be $50 like the other one.

Speaking of The Happiest Days of Our Lives: everyone who pre-ordered from Subterranean Press and is getting antsy because they've waited so long deserves a big apology from me. A couple of things happened while we were putting the book together which were not my fault (OpenOffice and MSOffice not playing nicely was a significant setback for the timetable) but the latest delay is squarely on my shoulders. I've been working my way through just over 2000 signature sheets for several weeks. I've only had time to work on a 100 or so a day until last week, because I just didn't have any other time in my schedule. This has worked out pretty well for the final product, because my signature starts to break down after about 200 pages, but it's increased the wait quite a bit. The good news is that I have about 400 left, and I'm doing them in two sessions today. They'll be sent off to Subterranean Press tomorrow, so the book can go to press and get into your hands real quick. Oh, did I mention that this wait has allowed me to secure a pretty awesome Afterword from my son Ryan? I couldn't be happier about that.

Finally, if you've written or seen a review of Memories of the Future, Volume One, would you leave a link in the comments here? I'd like to collect them all together and share them in a post later this week.

Okay, that's it. If you haven't heard this week's Futurecast, you should be able to get it in the usual way, or you can go to MemoriesoftheFuturecast.com and pick it up directly.

Good/Inexpensive Naturopath?

Posted by [info]bloodcandies in [info]vancouver on 2009.11.16 at 10:30
Does that even exist? Preferably I'd like it to be on the drive, but were there any awesome naturopaths you've had that are worth the price? Or maybe there's naturopath doctors out there who are inexpensive and amazing? Please share. Thanks!

Well, it's a little over a year since Obama has taken office.

I haven't looked for a while, but I looked at the Obameter just to see where he stands. Off the 500 promises being tracked.... see below.

Promise Kept 54
Compromise 14
Promise Broken 7
Stalled 17
In the Works 149

Two of my touchpoints, the use of torture and closing guantanamo are both listed as "in the works", more detail at the links.

far too many pictures from yesterday's walkabout - lots of fun with Larry, Chris, and BHK on a lovely autumn hike. Did a bit of geocaching, too - dropped off the meagan and paris bugs.

We also met Aaron Greene at the Cypress Swamp... he's a very talented photographer!

Had a research training module last week which, while interesting, meant I walked home in the rain a bit too often as am now sick. I didn't catch on as early yesterday as I should have--the temperature in my house is always inconsistent so I didn't realise that the flashes of being too hot or cold were from fever rather than environmental factors, and I thought the little mini-naps were just because I didn't sleep well. That sort of thing. By evening, though, I had a pretty obvious fever and was very dizzy. I went to friends' house to watch the new Dr Who anyway. By the time I got home I was really miserable, and even though I was burning up I couldn't seem to get warm. I took a warm shower and went to bed, though I couldn't sleep; I was too dizzy to stand up and bed was about the only place to be. I spent the night not being able to actually fall asleep--the 'too cold' problem went away after a bit and I was much too hot, drenched in sweat and thirsty and boiling. My brain, I can't even explain--brought on by Dr Who and plotting my Yuletide fic, I suppose, which is also a sci-fi nature of time and space and reality kind of thing, and I was running through all this stuff in my head about time travel and causality and I don't know if i was on the verge of some major scientific breakthrough or just about to die. :p But the fever broke sometime in the middle of the night and today I'm still sick, but can stand up and walk around, which is a definite improvement.

But I woke up to promises of tea from one housemate, and of soup from the other, and they both promise to take good care of me. They are so sweet.

The other day I went to see The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which was utterly brilliant. Whimsical and artistic and while sort of a universal story, you didn't really know how it was going to turn out. Also Tom Waits was the Devil (and quite charismatic about it). What's not to like?

I had a productive weekend up until the getting sick, and got a lot of work done. However, I missed lectures because of the research training and the being sick, so am behind. Argh.

I have a few brief observations on The Waters of Mars which I will cut so as not to spoil people who haven't seen it )

I am still pleased with my yuletide assignment. And I went scouring the person's LJ to see if I could glean any other preferences, and they mentioned a vague desire to see something that I, too, have been wanting to see for AGES, so I thought the obvious thing would be to just write it. If I could remember all of the weird stuff my brain was coming up with last night I would probably try to include that, but I don't think I'm equipped, nor frankly do I know if it would make any sense when exposed to reality.

Yet another show...

Posted by [info]duhbigman on 2009.11.16 at 11:17
On Wednesday, I'll be reading a couple of short sketches in Get A Real Job, a Comedy Bar show dedicated to the horrible jobs we've all had while trying to "make it" in our chosen profession.

There will be a variety of other acts singing songs, performing sketches or comedic monologues all based the terrible jobs they've had:

Jerry Schaefer
Marsha Mason
Lindsay Grant
Kirsten Gallagher
Doppelganger
Red Light This!
Jamie O'Connor
Derek Forgie

hosted by Mitch Risman & Erin Rodgers

Come out and share in their misery!

Wednesday, November 18, 8:00 p.m.
Comedy Bar, 945 Bloor Street West
Tickets only $10

See you there!

unrelated to everything else.

Raise a glass...

Posted by [info]mtbandit on 2009.11.16 at 07:31
..this evening, not while you're working. Tonight, I will pour a glass of my best scotch (Glenfiddich) and raise a glass in toast to a great man, my father, who passed this morning. At 87 years old, as my friend Vince says, that's a lot of innings. He lived them well.

I've been so crazy busy lately. I don't know why I'm pushing myself so hard, but I'm doing it more then I ever have.
Probably some kind of subconscious mortality thing.

Anyway aside from the writing for Nanowrimo almost all my focus is on my webshow and it's community.
Spending most nights in the chat room chilling out talking to some dedicated fans.

I finally got around to updating the Banner on the stickamPage.

Click it to see it in full size action

But hey officially announcing my new co-host
Natalia Reagan!

Give her some comment love, on her profile, friend her, gift her and check out her pics
And if you haven't already welcome our Video Fight Club Host Jani Wang

If you're sitting here reading this and you haven't joined the failpire community site what's stopping you?
It's still small so there's actually a good chance to meet other people, and in joining you might guide the site and community to topics you find interesting.

It's kind of neat. In the last few weeks I've really put a lot of effort in to growing the community aspects of the show and it's really grown.
There's been some fun forum threads, some really silly stuff, and a fair amount of art. Which is nice.

I'd love to get more people using the forum, so if there's any ideas of suggestion for it let me know!

I want to push thins from one show Thursday afternoons to several different shows every day.
I see the potential to easily turn this in to an online network.

What kind of shows/topics would you want to see in an interactive platform like this?

I've still got the weekly contests going on - check out the different prizes and ways to enter!

Thanks for your thoughts gangs. Hope you'll check out the site and join.

Stay Strong,

Watched Vera Drake yesterday.

Y'know, it's not like I was expecting a movie about an abortionist to be this wacky screwball comedy or anything, but DAMN... That was just seriously depressing. Would an inspirational speech or something have killed them?
